How to Welcome a New Employee

Initial Greeting

Ensure that your new employee knows where to go upon arrival. If there’s a security desk, have an ID card waiting there. Whether the employee stops by your office first or goes straight to HR, he or she will need to fill out the appropriate paperwork in the morning. By the time the new employee makes it to his or her desk, a computer and phone should be ready.

Introduction to the Team

Introduce the new employee to the team, either by walking around the office or by inviting everyone to a meeting. Exchange not only names, but job positions and even personal interests to break the ice. You may even have the team sign a welcome card before the employee’s arrival or plan a team lunch that day.

Office Tour

Walk the new employee around the office and point out key areas/rooms, such as the bathroom, break room and conference room. You may even choose to ask the team for a volunteer to be the new employee’s “buddy” for the first few weeks. This buddy can answer questions, point out where people sit and more.

Training

Schedule an orientation with your new employee to go over company goals, current projects, company policies and benefits, performance expectations etc. You should also set up training sessions with the appropriate individuals throughout the first week or two. During this time, keep your schedule on the lighter side (if possible) so you remain available for questions and further training.
